Tips on Cooking a Healthy Meal

We are always told that a good home cooked meal is a lot healthier than eating out. While this may be true in some cases, home cooked meals can actually have more calories than one can expect. When we cook at home, we can control the amount of things we put in our food and often we end up adding fatty foods to our diet, without even noticing it. If you enjoy cooking and you love to cook at home, there are a few things you can change, in order to make your meal a lot healthier. Additional calories come from oils and butter used in everyday cooking. Adding flavors with wine and heavy stock or even cream can make your food richer than what you get at a restaurant. You have to control everything that goes into your food. Once you are aware of what to limit, you will find ways to make your meals healthier and even tastier in the process. When you cook on a daily basis, try not to cook rich foods everyday, instead treat yourself and your family to a rich meal once a week and keep the rest of them as simple as possible. It will benefit your and your family’s health in the long run.

Reduce the amount of oil you use and switch to something a little more health friendly, like olive oil. Instead of using pure butter, try to use butter substitutes, or limit the amount of butter you use. Wine and stocks add both flavor and calories to your meals, so try to eliminate them. Use water instead or low sodium vegetable broth, this will help you add flavor and cut the fat. Cutting down on sugars and limiting your carbohydrate intake will also help you reduce your calorie intake. Do a little research and you too will be on your way to cooking healthy and tasty meals, in no time.
