Taking Small Steps in Exercise

If you have never been one to exercise much but want to start a new fitness program you may want to take small steps at first and work your way into it. Let’s say your goal is to run or walk a 5K. You may not be able to start out on the treadmill or walking around your neighborhood for that length at first. However, you can start out with walking a quarter mile and working your way all the way up to the 5K.

The problem with many people that start an exercise program is that they try to start out too fast only to become disappointed when they fail at it or don’t feel that they can complete the program. This is typically because they have taken on too much to start with. Instead of going slow and steady they feel that they have to be able to run a marathon on the first week and that’s just not usually feasible. This can lead to disappointment and low self-esteem even when it’s not their fault.

People say that slow and steady wins the race and in a program where you are starting out new and may not have the stamina yet, that phrase is certainly helpful. Take it slow and let your body adjust to the new fitness program so that you can slowly move up to a more intense workout. You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to get fit and don’t forget that you’ll feel better about yourself if you take it slow and keep on it till you reach your goal.
