Seems like the winter is when we’re the most likely to get sick. There are some things you can do to stay healthy in the winter. No one is guaranteed to be free from illness, but those people who seem to cruise through the cold and flu season are usually doing some good prevention that keeps them healthy.

You can’t wait until the first freeze to think about being healthy in the winter. It’s something you have to build up to. Therefore, don’t forget to take care of yourself all year long. Get plenty of exercise, and keep your weight down. Obese people are more likely to be sick than people who maintain their weight. Exercise gives you more energy, too. To stay healthy, you need to be energetic and rested. A strong body fights infection better.

Eat plenty of nutrient rich food. You need those vitamins before the cold sets in. Eat foods rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, zinc, vitamin A. These are the obvious ones, but all nutrients and vitamins work together to create a healthy person. Eat citrus fruits, bananas, whole grains, skim milk, dark and leafy vegetables. Avoid all that sugar. It’s good to take a multivitamin, too.

Some people swear by garlic. If you love the stuff, eat it up and feel the healthy benefits. You may want to start a regime of taking daily Echinacea and Golden Seal. They are reported to help prevent colds and infection.

Finally, get plenty of rest. Ever notice that people who party all the time seem to be sick the most? Try to get eight hours of sleep a night, and try to be consistent on when you go to bed. Give the body a healthy routine. That way, when you do go for all the fun of the holidays, you will recover faster.
