Free and Breathy

While hunched over my computer this morning, out of the corner of my eye, I saw my dog stretching.  Or I should say strrretccching. It looked like it felt really good, so I stopped my typing, and stretched my arms up over my head.  Oh my gosh! This is a habit we need to include in our day, several times a day. So I have decided to take a cue from our pets. Stretch. Roll on the floor. Run around in circles for no apparent reason. It’s free, and it really gives you an energy boost…with no caffeine.

The next step in our choreography of health is remembering to breathe. Not the wimpy shallow breathing we regularly employ. Taking three deep breaths each morning, before you even get out of bed, gets your blood flowing. As our day continues, and the stress builds up, we tend to hold our breath without even realizing it. It’s pretty tough to remember, “Oh yeah, it’s time to take a deep breath”. A great way to incorporate better breaths into your day, is to associate them with something else. These little efforts will teach your lungs expand. It will actually help your normal breathing, and you might even remember to breathe deeply more often.

  • Take 3 deep breaths before you climb out of bed.
  • Take 3 deep breaths before you start the car.
  • Take 3 deep breaths every time you are stopped at a red light.

Tibetan Monks and Yogis practice various breathing techniques throughout their days. They use breathing exercises to heal their bodies. Did you know that you can work and tighten your abs by simply doing Kundalini Yoga’s ”Breath of Fire”? No crunches needed. If this sounds good to you, check out the various breathing exercises, add a little oomph to your day. It’s free!
